Koa, is our family Inoa. Our responsibility (kuleana), our joy, and, our families name. Koa, can be translated as a warrior, strong, courageous, and bold. It also points to the Koa trees native to Hawaii, once used for building canoes, weapons, tools, and more. We have dedicated our lives to embodying and understanding our kuleana on the deepest levels. And would like to share our skills to help people feel vibrant, healthy, empowered, and to inspire everyone to do the same for their families and community, in their own unique way!
Currently, Koa trees are on the verge of extinction due to becoming a prized wood, deforestation, and economic changes within the islands. We support Kanaka (indigenous Hawaiian) efforts and restoration as much as possible through the imprints we can. A percentage of all profits generated from Koa House will go the following causes:
Brent Kekoa Ramos | Founder | Head Instructor
Barbara Ramos | Founder | Spa Director | LMT
Brent is a life-long martial artist since the age of 8, and most well known for his award winning school, 108, blending traditional Shaolin styles with Muay Thai & Modern Training Methods with heavy influence on being style agnostic, DIY- 108 was based in Chinatown, San Francisco (2010 – 2018).
His background in martial arts runs deep within striking, traditional, and internal arts. He is currently training Jiu Jitsu as well. As a teacher, he has taught thousands of people from sketchy Chinatown alleyways, Oakland parks; and within companies like Google, all the way to his own professional school. Brent loves exposing and fusing the urgency and beauty of traditional styles, with the efficiency of modern technique.
His background in Hawaiian massage and healing comes 100% from Kumu Jeana Iwalani Naluai on the island of Maui, where his family and roots have also resided for 3 generations in the town of Lahaina. Currently, he is finalizing the Colorado state requirements for LMT.
Growing between Lahaina and Denver has placed a unique opportunity to help expose indigenous (Kanaka) Hawaiian values & culture to new audiences here on the mainland, which is the backbone goal behind our services offered here at Koa House. Hailing between Lahaina, SF, & Denver – his ancestry also extends to Irish & Filipino heritage. Brent also holds a B.A. in Education & History from Metro State University – Denver.
Barbara is a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), specializing in authentic Hawaiian Lomi Lomi. Barbara received all training from Kumu Jeana Iwalani Naluai on the island of Maui. She has worked in high-end spa’s, to chain-brands, and even the back room of Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai schools. She loves to help her clients relax into the massage progressing from broad to deep, while also spending time on their problem areas to trace it back to the true source whether that be addressing physical, mental, or emotional bodies.
Her background in martial arts started 8 years ago in Chinatown San Francisco, at 108 with experience primarily based around traditional Chinese martial arts, and an emphasis on internal arts such as Zheng Taiji, Bagua, and Xingyi. She also holds an MFA for dramatic writing from Carnegie Mellon University.
Amelia, at the ripe age of 11, has already trained under legends, like Kumu Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu for Hula (AHA). Ralph & Rhalan Gracie for a stint of Jiu Jitsu. She helped run her dad’s school, 108 for years. Amelia is also a top-scoring forward in soccer, a girl scout, and is dedicated to the study and preservation of owl’s (Pueo). Her favorite place on Maui is “Baby Beach”. Amelia brings the creativity, and inspiration to Koa House, defining her own title of “Awesome Enabler”. And, we could not agree more.
Kaimana, at the ripe age of 1, helped us find our stunning space. He spends his time focusing on the fine art of babble, and stumbling around on mats with his best tiger friend in tow – “baboo”. He also heads up Koa House inspiration, and is in consistent training of “awesome enablement”, under the watchful and experienced eye of his big sister, Amelia.
